Summer: Color and Sound

"SUMMER Color and Sound" exhibits items used in kabuki that are symbolic to the Japanese summer, focusing on particular colors and sounds. There are hand drawn set designs that depict cascades and waves in blue and green-ish hues. Similar themes and color tonality used for the artworks printed on the program covers of the summers from the past provide a refreshing retreat from the heat outdoors. Instruments laid out on display in the hands-on section allow visitors to recreate various sounds such as a summer thunderstorm or a row boat on the ocean. A DVD introduces the new Kabukiza Theatre, even areas that are not open to the public, and another explains how some of the sounds (music) typical to kabuki is performed and by whom.
